1. This book broke my heart:

    Monoceros by Suzette Mayr

    (Coach House Books, 2011)

The story begins with the suicide of a teenage boy, who hangs himself because he’s gay, bullied, and feels utterly alone.

The rest of the book is about how his suicide changes everyone who was in his life, from his teachers to the unicorn-obsessed girl he returned an eraser to once, to his secret boyfriend and his secret boyfriend’s girlfriend, to his devastated parents, and to a drag queen named Crêpe Suzette.

This is an incredibly well-written novel, and so so important. Do read it.
